Description
Director, School of Art + Design
The J. Robert and Barbara A. Hillier College
of Architecture and Design at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT)
invites applications for a full-time tenured appointment as a faculty member
and Director of the School of Art + Design.
The School of Art + Design (A+D) is housed
alongside the New Jersey School of Architecture within the Hillier College of
Architecture and Design and offers faculty and students exciting opportunities
for teaching and learning, research and creative work, and service to the
university and community. As an urban
campus located in the vibrant University Heights neighborhood of Newark, Hillier
College supports an engaged community of artists, architects, and designers
interested in creating at all scales; and is one of six colleges and schools in
a public polytechnic university that attracts a diversity of students that
encourages collaboration across disciplines.
The School of Art + Design is a vibrant
academic community with approximately 200 undergraduate students in programs
offering NASAD- and CIDA-accredited degrees in Digital Design, Industrial
Design, and Interior Design. Low-residency graduate programs in Digital Design
are in the approval process. A+D benefits from the resources available in the
Northern New Jersey/New York City metropolitan area that provide access to some
of the world’s finest museums as well as opportunities to meet and study with
active industry representatives and practicing artists and designers engaged in
shaping our environment. There is a legacy and commitment in the Hillier
College of Architecture and Design to foster the innovative and complete integration
and use of 21st century information technology and digital
media within the processes and products of the various design professions they
contain. It is within these dual contexts
of an urban/physical/corporeal realm on the one hand and the virtual/digital/experimental
domain on the other that the School of Art + Design prepares students to design
the future.
The Director of the School of Art + Design is
the administrative and academic leader of the unit, is simultaneously a member
of the faculty and administration in the Hillier College of Architecture and
Design, and reports to the Dean of the College. The Director’s myriad
responsibilities include the serving as the representative for the programs to
audiences both within and outside of the university. The Director manages the
accreditation process and takes a lead in the recruitment of students for the
various programs.
The successful candidate will be a strategic
thinker and have qualifications meriting appointment at either the rank of
associate or full professor, will be committed to a collegial and collaborative
model of leadership and to interdisciplinary collaboration and cooperation, and
have excellent communication skills (oral, written, graphic).
Applicants will need to submit a CV, cover
letter, statement of interest(s), and a list of three references that shall
remain confidential unless/until the applicant is considered a finalist for the
position. Applicants should provide a link in their cover letter to a digital
portfolio in PDF format containing samples of scholarly work, research and
design projects, students’ work, and/or whatever material the candidate deems
to be relevant. Applicants are encouraged to apply by December 1, 2020. The
position, however, will remain open until filled. As an EEO employer, NJIT is
committed to building a diverse and inclusive teaching, research, and working
environment and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national
origin, age, marital status, gender, disability, religion or veteran status.
