SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The BDes in Interaction Design, situated in the
Ian Gillespie Faculty of Design and Dynamic Media (DDM), focuses on design that
facilitates experiences between people and environments through emerging
technologies. The program places particular emphasis on open source and shared
value economies, digital citizenship, and the materiality of interactions,
focusing on ethical design practices addressing cultural and socio/political
issues in relation to emerging technology. Interaction Design plays an active
and strategic role in shaping a sustainable future. Design at Emily Carr
University has evolved as a practice that responds to and engages the world
around us, focusing on creating compelling messaging, narratives and
experiences and grounded in the ecological, political and socio-technical
contexts of contemporary societies. All majors in the DDM Faculty share values
and goals in areas of collaboration, sustainability, interdisciplinarity,
critical engagement with technology, new research methods, new approaches to
design and the making of imaginative and provocative work.
Candidates should possess the ability to teach
students at multiple levels, from Foundation to Graduate Studies, and will be
expected to contribute to the development of new curriculum in an institution
that is committed to the interrelation of theory and practice. The successful
candidates will join a dynamic team of cross-disciplinary Design faculty from
across the Communication Design, Industrial Design and Interaction Design
majors. Candidates should be equally fluent in current design discourse and studio
practices and in balancing the conceptual, aesthetic and technical demands of
the discipline. Faculty are expected to participate in portfolio reviews, upper-level design critiques, provide undergraduate and graduate student
supervision, serve on administrative committees, engage in research, and to be
an active member of the Emily Carr community.
QUALIFICATIONS
A successful candidate will have the following
qualifications and/or related experience:

terminal degree or the equivalent combination of education and
professional experience;
·
professional experience in Interaction Design;
·
experience in post-secondary teaching in a
collaborative teaching environment;
·
strong portfolio with exceptional interaction design work,
demonstrating UX design experience leading iterative human-centered and/or more-than-human centered research
activities;
·
a critical and practical engagement
with and/or interest in open source software frameworks and web
technologies;
·
experience with a wide range of prototyping techniques;
·
intercultural competence: the ability to communicate effectively
and appropriately with people of various cultures is expected.
Areas of focus may include:
·
service design (including digital service design)—e.g. for
wellness, healthcare, communities, NGOs, and governments;
·
design for social justice, digital citizenship and digital
literacy;
·
interaction design for big and small data, and agentive
technologies;
·
user experience design.

expertise in the areas of teaching, research, and professional practice, and

to teaching in the Interaction Design program, their research/professional
practice, and service/participation in institutional governance;

a statement of research;

a statement on the candidate’s contributions to diversity,
regardless of personal characteristics, describing any professional skills,
community experience, or willingness to engage in activities that advance institutional
diversity and equity in teaching, research, and service;

any relevant supporting materials (e.g., PDFs of publications, an
online portfolio of recent work, evidence of teaching effectiveness —samples of
syllabi, assignments, course evaluations, etc.);
·
the names and contact information of three referees.

Subject to budgetary approval, we anticipate
commencement in August 2021. Salary and rank will be commensurate with
professional status and teaching experience.
