3D Look developer

LEGO is looking for a CG Look Developer to join the LEGO CG product team to develop the pipeline, production tools and workflows to meet our artists needs and deliver the digital visualization content output to meet the current and future business requirements for LEGO

To do that we need skilled developers who can help define the visual quality, inform on pipeline development, and help shape the tools that our artists will use to deliver on the needs of the business. The CG Look Developer will work alongside the Product manager & development team to support & mature the existing shader requirements to meet our customers future content needs and support the broader Digital transformation journey LEGO is on.


  • Main responsibilities will be to prep render ready model content for downstream use for Photoreal rendering. This will be a combination of shader work and geometry setup. Will be responsible for updating content as designs change before final delivery.
  • Work and Align with team to create final looks, templates and materials for CG Bricks and environments to be used in production of photoreal LEGO┬« content.
  • In alignment with team will define shader requirements, creating shader networks in Maya and VRAY, modifying shader parameters, applying texture maps, and iteratively refining the look to accomplish the art direction goals and integrating solutions into production pipeline.
  • Participate as a team member in determining various design and technical solutions; provides feedback to other team members of the production as well as collaborate with other departments to meet our business needs.
  • Create necessary texture maps for application to bricks and environments.
  • Work with a team of artists in a hands-on capacity to ensure technically and artistically accurate implementation of look developed assets.
  • To be able to work autonomously & within the team to deliver on business aligned Objectives and roadmap

Required skills: 

  • 2+ years production experience in feature film VFX or similar field.
  • Must have advanced experience with Autodesk Maya and Vray
  • Experience in PBR techniques
  • Basic MEL,PYMel or similar to automate recurring steps
  • Outstanding eye for light, shade, color, and detail in crafting photo-real shaders and materials.
  • Ability to balance quick turnaround with achieving a high degree of aesthetic quality.
  • Be willing to share knowledge and experience with others and help develop new junior talent.
  • Must possess strong initiative, excellent communication, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong Written & verbal communication skills (English)

Desired Additional Skills:

  • Experience with Substance Painter or Mari
  • Experience with Subsance Designer
  • Shading development, OSL, MDL or equivalent
  • Experience in Renderman, Arnold or other render engines 
  • Experience with Realtime engines such as Unreal 
  • TriPlanar and camera projection experience
  • Python skills
  • Experience with fur and hair grooming and cloth simulation
