Games - Art Director

Role Summary

The Art Director for the MSG Ventures Interactive group is responsible for establishing and executing upon the visual design direction of all projects undertaken by the Interactive Concept Group.

Specific Functions/Activities Summary

· Create and oversee the implementation of the look and feel for all test and release software created by MSG Ventures’ Interactive Concept Group.

· Manage, with Executive Producer’s oversight, the Concept Group’s art team, including all internal 3D art resources as well as any third-party art vendors.

· Research and establish art production pipeline and workflow for future MSG Ventures Interactive projects using internal and external resources on all major third-party games engines.

· Assure, in collaboration with Project Manager, the timely and on-budget delivery of all art assets required for the implementation of Concept Group software.

· Attend and report in daily scrums and bi-weekly sprint planning sessions, reviews, and retrospectives in accordance with Agile best practices.

· Communicate to other MSG and MSG Ventures executives the visual direction of Concept Group projects both in prose and through concise presentation of concept visuals.

Game Art Creation and Production (80%) The Art Director’s primary responsibility shall be to conceive of and direct the implementation of the visual design of all MSG Ventures’ Mass Interactive Concept Group software. The Art Director shall work with Executive Producer and Game Designer(s) to assure that every aspect of our projects’ visual designs, from initial sketches to completed assets, maintain continuity with the brand guidelines and the team’s creative vision.

Further responsibilities include working within an Agile software development framework (in collaboration with a Project Manager) to assure timely and complete deliveries of all relevant

art assets to the engineering team in production-ready formats, providing artists with clear, timely, and comprehensive feedback on works in progress, and identifying aspects of planned work best suited to internal vs. outsourced production.

Art Team Management (20%)

The Art Director shall manage the Concept Group’s art team from both a development and personnel perspective. The Art Director shall assess team members’ skills, assign work accordingly, establish frameworks for specialization and improvement of technical and artistic capabilities and work with the Executive Producer to mentor both new and experienced team members. In addition, Art Director shall liaise with third-party vendors and partners, assuring high quality deliveries and establishing and maintaining relationships with all external art contractors and outsourcing teams.

 

Qualifications

· BFA/MFA preferred or equivalent experience

· 7-10 years of 3D games art creation experience required, with 2-4 as a Lead or Director

· Specialty in one aspect of the 3D games art creation pipeline required (concept art, character art, environmental art, 3D modeling, graphic design, technical art, animation, lighting and/or VFX) with secondary skills in another highly recommended and tertiary specialization a definite plus

· Ability to deliver feedback and critique work in all of the above disciplines

· Superior communications and team management skills

· Experience with VR/AR/MR visual design a plus

· Experience as working in an Agile team and/or familiarity with Agile methodology preferred

· Expertise with games industry drawing, painting and 3D modeling software (Adobe Creative Cloud, Maya/3DS Max, Substance, ZBrush) required. Experience with the Unity game engine, as well as MS Office, JIRA, Trello and other common games production software highly preferred. Scripting experience helpful.

· Must submit a portfolio of your work
