Lead Narrative Designer

Deck Nine Games is currently hiring a?Lead Narrative Designer?for our next narrative adventure game.

Do you enjoy crafting narrow but deep experiences??Can you love a game equally for its gameplay and its characters, its themes and its story arcs??Do you have equal strengths in game design and writing? Do you hunger to stand in front of a team, inspire and lead them in creating a deeply personal game that fans talk about for years? If so, then you may be the right person for the job. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with stakeholders the Game Director, Narrative Director, and Lead Game Designer to create a seamless narrative experience from gameplay to story 

  • Assist in the creation and development of gameplay and content in collaboration with game designers, level designers, and artists 

  • Assist in the creation and development of story in collaboration with the Narrative Director and the writing team 

  • Lead and mentor a team of narrative designers 

  • Take ownership of narrative-related game systems and pipelines 

  • Take ownership of all non-cinematic writing 

  • Implement of gameplay logic and flow in our narrative tools 

  • Write documentation explaining the gameplay for our scenes and how they support the narrative 

  • Track all of the choices made in our game with an eye towards frequency, logic, and impact 

  • Work with design, writing, and programming to keep our narrative tools up-to-date 

  • Understand the needs of our players and ensure the gameplay developed by the team contributes to an engaging and memorable player experience 

  • Work closely with everyone to create clear creative strategies and solve creative problems 

  • Listen to all the ideas, coherently answer questions, and protect the core vision 

  • Review, troubleshoot, and provide feedback 

  • Be a passionate leader every day  


Requirements: 

  • 6+ years of experience as a narrative designer, preferably with 3+ years as a Lead Narrative Designer or Narrative Director 

  • Significant involvement in 2 published games, with at least 1 project at senior level 

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills 

  • Exceptional creativity and design skills 

  • Strong knowledge of player mentality and motivations 

  • Passionate about narrative adventure games and the desire to grow their game experience 

  • Strong understanding of current and past game trends 

  • Experience working through all phases of narrative design 

  • Knowledge of contemporary gameplay and narrative design, with an understanding of different narrative systems/delivery mechanisms. 

  • Exceptionally proofreading and copyediting skills 

  • Outstanding written and interpersonal skills 


Pluses: 

  • Good knowledge of at least 1 industry-standard engine, ideally Unreal 4 

  • Experience in game and/or level design 

  • Familiarity with a variety of editors and scripting languages 

  • Understanding the specific needs of narrative adventure games 

  • Shipped at least 1 narrative adventure game 

  • Puzzle design experience, especially in the context of narrative adventures 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Our first narrative game, Life is Strange: Before the Storm is loved by fans and has won multiple awards, including Game of Year and was nominated for both a VGA and a BAFTA. Recently we just announced our next game, Life is Strange: True Colors, due to be released in September 2021. 

The studio is 100+ people and is in sunny Westminster, Colorado at the base of the Rocky Mountains. We hope to share more information about our next title with Square Enix as soon as we can.
