Assistant Professor - Animation &Visual Effects

The Department of Art + Design invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Animation and Visual Effects to begin August, 2022. 

APSU offers a BFA Art degree with a concentration in Animation and Visual Effects, which is  a growing program that seeks to prepare our diverse students for active engagement and collaboration within the animation, film, and entertainment industries.

The APSU Department of Art + Design is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and offers BFA and BA degrees with concentrations in Studio Art, Graphic Design, Animation and Visual Effects, Art History, and Art Education. The department consists of sixteen full-time faculty, three support staff, and fifteen part-time instructors who celebrate the mission of teaching and innovation in serving 200+ undergraduate majors. Three on-campus galleries support the Art + Design programs and the growing art community in nearby Nashville provides ample opportunities for professional and student exhibitions. In Fall of 2017 the Department moved into a new $21.3 million dollar, 46,000 square feet Art + Design Building, featuring custom studio space for all the concentrations.

Primary responsibilities include: 
  • Teaching Animation, Visual Effects, Digital 3D, capstone development, foundations, and collaborative film development; 
  • Teaching all levels of students, who come from diverse backgrounds;
  • Advising and mentoring students in their course of studies and individual research;
  • Shared oversight of the Animation and Visual Effects Studio, equipment, materials;
  • Shared oversight of the Animation and Visual Effects curriculum and programming;
  • Collaborating with fellow faculty within and across departments and participating in APSU’s shared governance;
  • Continued engagement in ongoing creative research and professional activities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • The ideal candidate has experience with 3D asset creation (such as modeling, texturing, rigging, lighting/rendering), Visual Effects (such as compositing, matchmoving, rotoscoping, fx simulation, matte painting). We seek bonus skills in the areas of VR/XR, projection mapping, motion graphics, green screen live-action filming, visual development, technical direction, film editing, gaming, digital painting, storyboarding, and a variety of animation techniques/mediums and knowledge of the history and evolution of animation and visual effects techniques.

  • The primary software in the classroom consists of: Autodesk Maya, The Foundry Nuke, Adobe Creative Cloud, Dragonframe, and ToonBoom Harmony. Secondary Software consists of: Zbrush, Substance Painter, Houdini, and Unity/Unreal. 
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • M.F.A. in Animation, Visual Effects, or related field by August 1, 2022.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of industry experience and/or teaching experience.
