Staff Writer

Description

Deck Nine Games is hiring a Staff Writer to join our narrative team on an unannounced adventure game. We’re looking for a writer whose love of story is animated by compassion and curiosity, someone who loves games but draws influence from a broad swathe of narrative media, someone with a desire to expand the boundaries of what sorts of stories games tell, and what sorts of characters we tell them about. You should fall in love with the characters you write, understand the purpose of every word choice you make, and light up at the chance to talk with your fellow writers about your work and theirs. This is a highly collaborative position; the right fit will be sensitive, thoughtful, and an absolute pro at giving and receiving feedback.

If that sounds like you, here’s what you can look forward to at Deck Nine: a full-time position—either on site at our offices in beautiful Westminster, Colorado or remote—with benefits, competitive pay, and an opportunity to work with our incredible team to help shape the identity of a super dope project. We’re a diverse team of bonkers talented writers, and you’re going to be spending a lot of time hanging out with us, brainstorming, breaking story, developing characters, and solving story problems collaboratively. When you’re not doing that, you’ll be helping to write the game script with our proprietary toolset, which allows us holistic influence over all aspects of the development process, including dialogue, gameplay design, branching logic, art, and cinematics.

We’re big on keeping our team as diverse as possible, so writers of color, disabled writers, queer writers, and writers of marginalized genders are ESPECIALLY encouraged to apply!

Requirements
  • At least one professional writing credit. This may include a released video game, purchased screenplay, or published book, article, or short story.
  • 2+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience writing in a programming language of some kind. Our system allows us control over the logic and gameplay of our game, which requires comfort with programming basics. Experience using Twine or similar interactive fiction engines fulfills this requirement.
  • You must already be authorized to work in the U.S. – we are not sponsoring overseas applicants.
  • While this opportunity could be remote, relocation assistance is available for those moving to Colorado.

Pluses

  • BA or higher degree, especially in humanities, film, journalism, or creative writing.
  • Knowledge about, and experience in, the gaming industry.
  • Experience in education, leadership, outreach, or activism. Anything that evinces strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with artists from other disciplines.
  • Experience with advocating for and implementing thoughtful, authentic representation of characters from marginalized backgrounds in fiction.

How to Apply:

Apply through our website https://deckninegames.com/careers/ and include the following:

  • Two writing samples, 10 pages each max.
    • One of these must be a screenplay, game script or stage play excerpt (i.e. written and formatted as a script).
    • Your best shot at advancing to the next stage of our hiring process would be to include samples that clearly demonstrate a knack for sharp, snappy dialogue, strong characterization, and plotting that springs from authentic, dynamic relationships.
  • A cover letter that introduces you to us and answers the following questions:
    • How do you draw from your own background and life experiences when crafting narrative?
    • Why is game narrative personally important to you?
    • Don’t be afraid to demonstrate your personality! Writers who catch our attention with their cover letters are much more likely to stick in our heads.
  • Your resume.

Salary Range: $50,000-$75,000 DOE
