Founded in 1998, Retro Studios is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nintendo Company, Ltd.  Retro is a state-of-the-art game development studio, working in conjunction with Nintendo to bring award-winning games to Nintendo's cutting-edge next-generation platforms.  Retro Studios is located in beautiful Austin, Texas. Announced by Nintendo in January 2019, Retro Studios is currently in the midst of developing Metroid Prime 4 for the Nintendo Switch.
 
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
  • Create compelling environments with an emphasis on environmental storytelling. 
  • Work closely with art direction and leads to capture desired goals of look and play space. 
  • Develop high quality environment assets ranging from hard surface to organic models. 
  • Work within performance constraints. Strong technical ability to manage assets to fit poly counts, draw call limits, texture memory, gameplay space.  
  • Takes ownership of environmental assets and scene layout while encouraging collaboration across multiple disciplines to achieve high quality, innovative environment art 
  • Helps manage schedule of assigned environments. 
  • Develop, learn, and teach the latest techniques and technologies            
  • Mentors less experienced members of the team

SUMMARY OF REQUIREMENTS
  • Strong real time 3d environment portfolio demonstrating understanding of scale, proportion, attention to detail and composition. Portfolio must demonstrate advanced strengths in either world-building, hard surface modeling or organic modeling.  Proficiency in all a huge plus but must be visible in portfolio.
  • 5-7 or more years experience working as an environment artist in game development.  
  • AAA game development experience. 
  • Driven to learn and develop new methods and techniques for creating game art. 
  • Advanced knowledge of Maya, Substance Suite, Zbrush and PBR pipeline. 
  • Thrives working in a collaborative development environment. 
  • Comfortable receiving and giving constructive criticism and making artistic adjustments. 
  • Ability/desire to own a map/large portion of the game and take through completion leading a small team of artists. 

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Experience developing environments in a baked lighting pipeline
  • Switch development experience
  • Strong terrain authoring skills
