Senior Director, Technical Productions

ROLE SUMMARY: The Senior Director, Technical Production provides leadership, direction, and management for all departments related to the production of live events, technical event services, and stage management and production. The Sr Director will advise and consult on the development of and Production, Audio, and Broadcast systems and participate in all operational planning and commissioning activities prior to opening of the new state-of-the-art venue. Reporting to the VP of Production Advance, the Sr Director will oversee the Event Production technical department heads.

What will you do?

  • Works collaboratively with the VP Event Production, VP Building Operations and VP Venue Development to develop and execute standard operating procedures for operating, programming, and maintaining MSG Sphere production systems, equipment, and infrastructure.
  • Leads technical production team for the successful load in, rehearsal and changeover of internal and external events.
  • Leads team of specialty production system operators and programmers and oversees general maintenance of systems including audio systems, broadcast infrastructure, rigging and automation infrastructure and equipment, and production lighting systems.
  • Operates, maintains, and safeguards the technical assets of the Sphere, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, video, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
  • Implements design, sets up, maintains, and operates lighting, video and sound systems for attractions, residencies, events, and other productions and projects; assists guest designers and artists with technical matters
  • Advises production managers, lighting, and sound designers, on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show, and supervises the implementations of approved technical designs
  • Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, video, and rigging equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; coordinates preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the Sphere in advance of production dates.
  • Assist in the planning and tracking of budgets related to maintenance costs & estimates, utility cost estimates, and event cost estimates including internal and 3rd party labor requirements.
  • Collaborates with Sphere Studios to ensure proper coordination of show programming in advance of live events.
  • Attends technical rehearsals, in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the mounting the show
  • Assists with the preparation and control of production budgets; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies.

  • Director of Audio Systems
  • Senior Manager of Broadcast
  • Head of Rigging dept
  • Head of Lighting dept
  • Head of Stage Management

 

Indirect supervision of:

  • Production Riggers, Lighting, and Audio Technicians

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:

 

  • Ability to work at height (upwards of 200’-300’+) on interior and exterior catwalks and on building maintenance unit.
  • Extensive standing, walking, keyboard usage and general administrative duties
  • Occasional travel to NY or Burbank, CA (<10%)

What do you need to succeed?
  • Must have a high level of expertise in all areas of entertainment production technology, (rigging systems, lighting systems, audio systems, video playback and LED surfaces, and automation). Must have at least 10 years’ experience in supervising highly efficient teams.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing a team in a complex, fast-paced, and diverse environment, preferably in a live event venue or theater management role.
  • Candidates who have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours of college-level coursework (representing 2 years), or have shown similar self-development through certifications, trade school coursework, etc. are preferred.
  • Strong technical knowledge of rigging, fall protection, and safety equipment and protocols. ETCP Certification and/or Arena/Theater training a plus.
  • Strong technical knowledge of theatrical production systems including but not limited to lighting, audio, and intercom systems.
  • Working knowledge of specialty production systems including video and playback systems and show control systems
  • Windows/PC proficient and experience using Microsoft Office applications, Adobe Professional and Bluebeam. Experience with AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to interact with all levels of the organization.
  • Well organized and detail oriented with an ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and diplomacy.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule inclusive of weekends, nights and holidays required. May have split days off.
