Senior Manager Playback Systems

With MSG Sphere, we are creating an entirely new medium that will deliver immersive entertainment experiences at an unparalleled scale. Beyond a venue, Sphere is a multi-sensory platform with experiential technology programming directly to your senses. To deliver on this promise, we are building the largest immersive venue in the world, MSG Sphere at The Venetian in Las Vegas, with a second Sphere venue planned for London, pending necessary approvals. ROLE SUMMARY: The Senior Manager of Playback Systems will be responsible for one of the largest media server installations in the world feeding a 160,000 sq. ft. 16K x 16K domed LED media plane. You will also manage playback to a 366’ tall exterior LED dome in 24/7 operation. Smaller playback systems include temporary and permanent atrium activations and feeds to IPTV and digital signage systems. You will manage a team of full-time programmers, operators, data wranglers, and technicians who will maintain the playback systems and program and run shows ranging from corporate events to nationally broadcast awards shows.

What will you do?

  • Manage a team who will program and maintain the largest 7thSense installation in the world including hiring, training, scheduling, mentoring, and filling in as needed.
  • Responsible for ensuring 7thSense servers stay in top operational condition, including emergency repairs and scheduled maintenance.
  • Responsible for maintaining show-critical video output to interior media plane and 24/7 exosphere display.
  • In collaboration with Technical Operations, responsible for additional playback systems including atrium activations and digital signage, driven by both 7thSense and non-7thSense systems.
  • Work closely with Display Systems team to troubleshoot and resolve source of display problems.
  • Work closely with IT and Broadcast teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues with ST2110 network connectivity.
  • Coordinate with internal and external design and production teams to bring new shows into the venue.
  • Work with other venue managers to ensure all operational and production needs are met, sharing knowledge, resources, and personnel with other disciplines.
  • Along with other Production Systems managers, will serve rotating shifts as the Manager on Duty supervising all disciplines within the Production Systems department.
  • Coordinates with departmental managers and leadership to quickly address unresolved issues that arise in a brand-new venue, and to subsequently participate in debriefs to explore updates to departmental roles and responsibilities.
  • Create Standard Operating Procedures, training guides, and accurate and continually updated documentation.
  • Assist in planning and documenting department operational and capital budgets.
  • Maintain accurate records of work and maintenance activities.

 

SUPERVISION: 

  • Eight Immersive Video Engineers 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:

  • Pre-opening, approximately 25% travel to NYC, Burbank, and elsewhere for training.
  • Post-opening, occasional travel (<10%) to NYC, Burbank, and trade conferences.
  • Extensive standing, walking, keyboard usage and general administrative duties
  • This is a 100% onsite role, with potential for flexible remote Fridays.

What do you need to succeed?
  • Must have advanced knowledge of media servers, with advanced experience in multiple platforms such as 7thSense, Disguise, Pandora, and Hippo.
  • Must have 10+ years proven experience in high profile live production environments, including theatrical, concerts, sports, and awards shows.
  • Must have proven experience working in 3D spaces, with thorough knowledge of warping, ST maps, OBJ files, etc.
  • Must have experience working with large scale media server installations.
  • Must have a solid knowledge of networking and IP configuration.
  • Highly desire working experience with SMPTE 2110.
  • Highly prefer experience with broadcast systems.
  • Highly prefer substantial experience working with LED video walls.
  • Has working familiarity with a variety of theatrical production technologies including lighting, audio, and special effects.
  • Seeking experience, in order of preference, in Unreal, Unity, Notch, and Touch Designer.
  • Bonus skills include scripting skills such as JavaScript, Python, and Ansible.
  • Must have proven experience managing teams during high-profile, stressful events.
  • Must be willing to learn roles and skills of direct reports and step in to assist when necessary.
  • Must be flexible with work hours; this role performs on “Production time” with many work hours taking place outside of the traditional 9-5.
  • Must be willing to work nights, weekends and holidays as needed, rotating with other managers when possible.
  • Must be able to travel for training purposes during first year. Subsequent years will have occasional travel for training and conferences.
  • Must be flexible in roles and responsibilities – this is a brand-new bleeding-edge venue with many unknowns, “not my job” is not an acceptable phrase.
  • Above all, must have a love of using performance, technology, and media to bring an amazing experience to our guests, and provide leadership and mentorship to our staff.
