The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education, and exhibition. AMNH has been a decades long innovator in the use of video, electronic and interactive media, presentation of leading-edge display technologies to the public in the service of public education, and in house production of ultra-high resolution science driven content. In partnership with leading manufacturers and integrators AMNH successfully pioneered the first fulldome digital Planetarium, the first TrueLaser/REC2020/High Dynamic Range blended display, and video walls displaying content at more than double 8k resolution. To support the Gilder Center Invisible Words Theatre (opening in Winter 2022-2023), as well as the vast installed base of video and interactive media and future projects, AMNH is seeking a Chief Video Engineer.

 

The Chief Video Engineer will engage in the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of the Electronic media systems at the AMNH. The Chief video engineer will develop a facilities wide perspective to inform ongoing development of processes and equipment standards to facilitate ease of operations and maintenance. The duties shall include management of technical staff, oversight of technical documentation, technical project design & management, as well as serving as a primary communications conduit to AV equipment manufacturers.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

• Ability to successfully collaborate with complimentary technical museum staff, as well as outside integrators and manufacturers.

• Ability to manage technical staff.

• Ability to read, understand and create comprehensive and readable large system level schematic drawings.

• Ability to read architectural blueprints and interpret electrical drawings.

• Understanding of video distribution, routing systems and advanced signal flow.

• Theoretical and practical experience with video reference signals, LTC, video formats (SD, HD, UHD, Cinema 2k & 4k, etc.), frame rates, color space (RBG, YCbCr, etc), television standards (Rec. 601, Rec 709, Rec 2020), video transport (analog, SDI, HDSDI, 12G, HDMI, DP, SDVOE), serial and network communications, and test equipment related to the above.

• Deep understanding of maintenance, diagnostics and troubleshooting process and documentation.

• Comfortable efficiently troubleshooting complex systems under high pressure show conditions.

• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

• High school diploma or equivalent.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

• Experience in broadcast, theme park or large-scale immersive environments.

• Experience with projection technology and lensing, LCD screens, and LED display walls.

• Understanding of advanced network setup as pertains to video/audio over IP systems.
