Tenured/Tenure-track, Interactive Media & Business

Description

NYU Shanghai is inviting applications for two full time tenured/tenure track research positions at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor to expand and support our new undergraduate major in Interactive Media and Business. We seek candidates who have completed a doctoral degree and whose research and scholarship lies at the intersection of emerging media and business, especially within and across Global and/or Asian contexts.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose research focuses on business, technological and/or social-impact innovation in, through, and with emerging media and digital economies. Our program and faculty are highly interdisciplinary and we encourage applications from scholars in business, management, marketing, economics, humanities, digital innovation, social sciences, communication and media studies, informatics, data analytics, and other pertinent fields. We especially welcome applicants whose expertise and research bridges traditional disciplinary roots and boundaries with a commitment to innovative research and engaged teaching, and to connecting our students with real-world research, problems, and practices beyond the classroom and around the world.

Background

The Interactive Media and Business (IMB) major is where innovation and business meet through emerging media technology. IMB teaches how innovative ideas combine with technology, creativity, and business principles to yield viable products, services, and experiences. Our project-based curriculum explores new models for creation, innovation, and entrepreneurship through the development of digital services, software and hardware, the manipulation of digital media, the design and fabrication of material objects, the construction of virtual and physical spaces and services, and engagement with broad communities. Our seminars encourage the study of the histories, philosophies, and practices of emerging media as they impact society in business contexts and as a whole. Students elect multiple emerging media arts, technology, and design foundation courses from our closely aligned Interactive Media Arts program. Our major courses focus on developing skills within and across four “Ms”: mindsets, mapping, methods, and making.

Our program is currently served by 10 full-time faculty (seven of whom are clinical teaching faculty and three tenured/tenure track faculty), and one part-time faculty member. Our IMB program currently has over 50 undergraduate majors and is growing, and our courses also serve a new academic minor in Creativity and Innovation created in close partnership with the NYU Shanghai’s Program on Creativity and Innovation.

Responsibilities

Faculty are expected to teach established and elective courses, and also to develop their own electives based on their unique background and interests. Current elective offerings include courses on creativity and innovation, user experience, game and creative learning design, rapid prototyping, communication for influence, entrepreneurship, life design, product design, and media and financial technologies. Faculty also participate in program and school-wide initiatives and committee work. A commitment to undergraduate education and enthusiastic dedication to the new IMB major are essential.

NYU Shanghai has a diverse and international student population. Strong consideration will be given to candidates who have worked in institutions with international student populations.

Qualifications

We seek candidates whose work intersects with the current curriculum and research needs of IMB. This includes, but is not limited to: business in the digital economy; data analytics, analysis, and presentation; digitally-enabled products and services; e-commerce; financial systems and technology; blockchain and cryptocurrency; hardware prototyping and manufacturing; and social-impact entrepreneurship. Strong consideration will be given to candidates with a record of successful advancement of their own innovations in their respective fields.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research and teaching interests,  vision statement of globalized education, and electronic copies of up to five relevant research publications. To complete the online process, junior applicants will be prompted to enter the names and email addresses of at least three referees. Each referee will be contacted to upload a reference letter.
