Director, Screen
Industries Research and Training Centre (SIRT)
Sheridan is currently seeking candidates for the role of Director,
SIRT who will be responsible for advancing SIRT’s reputation and evolution as one
of Canada’s leading digital media applied research and training centres. The incumbent reports to the Dean, Innovation
and provides strategic and operational leadership for the direction of SIRT and
its suite of innovation supports for industry and community partners. These
activities provide compelling training experiences to students, research
opportunities for faculty and staff, and substantive economic and social
benefits for individual companies and community partners as well as Ontario and
Canada as whole.
The incumbent is responsible for the establishment and development
of partnerships and revenue generation that will ensure SIRT’s financial viability;
as well as the management of both research and operational staff and SIRT’s
facilities and extensive advanced technologies. The Director works collaboratively with the
Directors of Sheridan’s four other Research and Entrepreneurship Centres to
foster interdisciplinary and cross-sector partnerships that engage faculty and
student researchers to best meet the needs of our innovation partners. The
incumbent is also responsible for ensuring SIRT’s deliberate integration with
other areas of Sheridan, driving academic innovation through connections to the
Faculties, and with specific attention to the Generator Support Office which
manages research administration functions and supports for Sheridan.
Located at Pinewood Toronto Studios in the heart of
the city’s film and television studio district, SIRT (https://www.sirtcentre.com/) is an integral part of Generator at Sheridan and our institution’s
research, innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem.
SIRT was established by Sheridan in 2009 and works extensively with
students and staff to provide innovation support to industry and community
partners in areas such as applied research and training. Located at Pinewood
Toronto Studios in a 10,000 sq. ft. sound stage, SIRT links industry and other
partners to advanced digital media infrastructure and cutting edge expertise. Together
with our partners, we explore and evolve digital image technical and creative
processes for the film, television and interactive media industries as well as
application of screen industry technologies within the performing arts and
other sectors. Currently, the Centre is focusing on developing and enhancing
technology in digital cinema production, virtual production, computer
graphics/visual effects, software engineering, virtual humans, virtual &
augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and remote collaboration.

- Providing strategic leadership for SIRT based on your advanced
understanding of global innovation occurring within screen industry
technologies and workflows; and the unique leading role that SIRT can play
within Ontario as it continually adapts to meet the changing innovation needs
of potential community and industry partners.
- Guiding operations with responsibility and accountability for
performance and financial viability of SIRT through revenue generation from
grants and contracts for applied research, training and other innovation
supports. Includes development and delivery of all SIRT projects, ensuring that
project mandates are fulfilled as specified in contracts with funding agencies,
industry and community partners.
- Stewarding SIRT’s external partnerships and business development –
cultivating applied research, training and other innovation support partnerships
with industry and community partners, funding agencies, and other academic
institutions.
- Providing leadership and direction to the SIRT team; optimizing
team performance and professional capacity through effective recruiting,
workflow/project planning, employee development and performance management.
- Actively engaging with other research and entrepreneurship centres
at Sheridan, the Faculties, and Sheridan’s Generator Support Office in order to
grow Sheridan’s innovation ecosystem and more fully meet the needs of our
community and industry partners as well as the social and economic development
needs of our communities.
- You
have proven experience in project planning and management leading a
variety of applied research projects, including mid to large, and long-term; as
well as discipline/industry expertise relevant to SIRT’s areas of focus.
- You bring an entrepreneurial
spirit and innovation skills that allow you comfort with entering
unchartered territory and spotting new opportunities.
- Your excellent interpersonal, communication, negotiation
and mediation skills allow you to build relationships and formal
partnerships with internal and external stakeholders with diverse agendas.
- You bring proven leadership
experience with the ability to affectively manage people and change in order
to optimize team performance.
The
ideal candidate will possess the following:
- Master’s degree in Film and Television,
Animation, Visual FX, Interactive Media, Digital Media, Computer Science/Information
Technology, Business, or other related field
- A minimum of 7 years of significant work
experience in a related, relevant area of focus (Equivalency wlll be
considered)
- A deep knowledge of the screen industries
sector and broad and in-depth knowledge of current and emerging trends in screen
industry technologies
- Capacity to develop and execute research
projects and demonstrated experience in a research and development environment
- Business and partnership development
experience
- Experience in addressing Equity, Diversity,
and Inclusion within organizational development as well as in meeting community
needs through partnerships and projects
- Grant writing and administration experience
- Experience in financial budgeting, management
and reporting
- Thorough knowledge of research funding
landscape in Ontario and Canada

Studios - Toronto (May be assigned activities at any Sheridan Campus).This
position will work a hybrid of on campus and remote work.
