Virtual Element Design is the 3D modeling department of the LEGO Group.
The team consist of 12 people as well as external partners and freelancers. Our
main tasks are remodeling of new element designs, texturing as well as
maintaining element database with updates and corrections. The elements are
used widely for different purposes from building instructions, apps, packaging
and various digital media. We are focusing on
quality, meeting deadlines and a strong collaboration both inside and outside
of our own team.
In
order to meet the needs of modern content creation and advertising LEGO is
looking at taking its CG to the next Level in order to provide image content
for all manner of marketing needs.
To
do that we need skilled artists who can help define the visual quality, inform
on pipeline development and help shape the tools that our artists will use to
deliver on the needs of the business. This is a great opportunity to help build
the future for CG image creation in LEGO and become a valued member of the team.
This will be a freelance position for the remainder of 2020 with
the possibility of a full time position in early 2021 depending on performance.
Core responsibilities
The Look Development Artist will define all the technical and creative
aspects needed to create the appearance for CG assets for a project.
- Main responsibilities will be to prep render ready model content
for downstream use for Photoreal rendering. This will be a combination of
shader work and geometry setup. Will be responsible for updating content
as designs change before final delivery.
- Work and Align with supervisors to create final looks, templates
and materials for CG Bricks and environments to be used in production of
photoreal LEGO® content.
- In alignment with supervisor will define shader requirements,
creating shader networks in Maya and VRAY, modifying shader parameters,
applying texture maps, and iteratively refining the look to accomplish the
art direction goals and integrating solutions into production pipeline.
- Participate as a team member in determining various design and
technical solutions; provides feedback to other team members of the
production as well as collaborate with other Departments to meet our
business needs.
- Create necessary texture maps for application to bricks and
environments.
- Work closely with supervisors to ensure that all assets work within
the scope of lighting & color pipeline requirements.
- Work with a team of artists in a hands-on capacity to ensure
technically and artistically accurate implementation of look developed
assets.
- Keep other supervisors appraised of issues across the various
delivery stages and troubleshoot issues as needed.
Do you have what it takes?
Candidates must Proficient
in English and need to work onsite in Billund 4-5 days a week. Due to COVID19
restrictions we will favor candidates with an EU passport that are living
in or around Denmark.
In addition to this you have:
- 3+ years production experience in feature film VFX or similar field.
- Must have advanced experience with Autodesk Maya, Vray, Adobe
Photoshop.
- Experience in PBR techniques a must.
- Outstanding eye for light, shade, color, and detail in crafting
photo-real shaders and materials.
- Ability to balance quick turnaround with achieving a high degree of
aesthetic quality.
- Be willing to share knowledge and experience with others and help
develop new junior talent.
- Must possess strong initiative, excellent communication, time management
and problem-solving skills.
- Must be able to work in a collaborative environment, taking
direction positively from the Leads and Supervisors while keeping
production staff updated on progress and scheduling conflicts.
- Experience in shot lighting and composition.
- Detailed understanding of color and lighting theory.
- Experience with zBrush, Mudbox, Substance painter Mari or other
texture and normal/displacement map generation.
- Nuke
experience a plus.
- Experience in Renderman, Arnold or other render engines is a plus.
- Experience with Realtime renderers such as Unreal is a plus.
- Experience with fur and hair grooming and cloth simulation a plus.
- TriPlanar and camera projection experience a plus.
- Python and C++ skills a plus.
Relevant educations are a plus, but not necessary. Applicants will be
evaluated based on their submission, work experience and quality.
