Director, School of Art + Design

Description

Director, School of Art + Design

The J. Robert and Barbara A. Hillier College of Architecture and Design at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) invites applications for a full-time tenured appointment as a faculty member and Director of the School of Art + Design.

The School of Art + Design (SA+D) is housed alongside the New Jersey School of Architecture within the Hillier College of Architecture and Design and offers faculty and students exciting opportunities for teaching and learning, research and creative work, and service to the university and community.  As an urban campus located in the vibrant University Heights neighborhood of Newark, Hillier College supports an engaged community of artists, architects, and designers interested in creating at all scales; and is one of six colleges and schools in a public polytechnic university that attracts a diversity of students that encourages collaboration across disciplines.

The School of Art + Design is a vibrant academic community with approximately 200 undergraduate students in programs offering NASAD- and CIDA-accredited degrees in Digital Design, Industrial Design, and Interior Design. Recently the SA+D received approval for low-residency graduate programs in Digital Design, which will start in the Fall of 2022. The SA+D benefits from the resources available in the Northern New Jersey/New York City metropolitan area that provide access to some of the world’s finest museums as well as opportunities to meet and study with active industry representatives and practicing artists and designers engaged in shaping our environment. There is a legacy and commitment in the Hillier College of Architecture and Design to foster the innovative and complete integration and use of 21st-century information technology and digital media within the processes and products of the various design professions they contain.  It is within these dual contexts of a physical realm on the one hand and the virtual experimental domain on the other that the School of Art + Design prepares students to design the future.

The Director of the School of Art + Design is the administrative and academic leader of the unit, is simultaneously a member of the faculty and administration in the Hillier College of Architecture and Design, and reports to the Dean of the College. The Director’s myriad responsibilities include serving as the representative for the programs to audiences both within and outside of the university. The Director manages the accreditation process and takes a lead in the recruitment of students for the various programs. To that end, administrative experience is a must.

The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker and have qualifications meriting appointment at either the rank of associate or full professor, will be committed to a collegial and collaborative model of leadership and to interdisciplinary collaboration and cooperation, and have excellent communication skills (oral, written, graphic). Experience with fundraising, grant support and research is highly desired.

Applicants will need to submit a CV, cover letter, statement of interest(s), and a list of three references that shall remain confidential unless/until the applicant is considered a finalist for the position. Applicants should provide a link in their cover letter to a digital portfolio in PDF format containing samples of scholarly work, research, and design projects, students’ work, and/or whatever material the candidate deems to be relevant. Applicants are encouraged to apply by December 1, 2021. The position, however, will remain open until filled. As an EEO employer, NJIT is committed to building a diverse and inclusive teaching, research, and working environment and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, marital status, gender, disability, religion, or veteran status.
