Principal Audio Engineer - Hybrid

Who are we hiring?
MSG Sphere is a contemporary entertainment venue where immersive technology and experiences intertwine. The first MSG Sphere is currently under construction in Las Vegas. The venue will be completely covered by an iconic exterior LED exosphere. The interior LED media plane measures in at 160,000 square feet. Seating capacity is 17,500. The audio system is comprised of a massive multi-channel high-definition wave filed synthesis matrix array of unprecedented scale, complexity, and quality. This massive internal volumetric space will enable showcasing immersive events, new technologies, artist residencies and other forms of entertainment. MSG Sphere Studios, located in Burbank, is an end-to-end capture to post shop for the highly specialized content needed for MSG Sphere experiences. MSG Sphere Studios is seeking a Principal Audio Engineer to join our groundbreaking Show Systems Technology team. This position will bridge the engineering and creative worlds defining what it means to create world-class audio content for MSG Sphere projects utilizing revolutionary technologies. As the Principal Audio Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering show technical systems and solutions to support MSG Sphere, Sphere Studios, and beyond. The ideal candidate will have strong experience designing and operating large-scale, high performance audio systems. The role requires a blend of designer, engineer, and project manager. The role will be part of the development team assisting in defining the entire audio pipeline, from recording concepts and techniques to audio editing, mixing, and spatialization, through to final playback and show control integration. Flexibility and quick thinking are key to working in this fast-paced studio environment.

What will you do?

• Work with stakeholders to define requirements for show technical (audio) solutions
• Produce high-level technical documents, diagrams, and PowerPoint presentations to communicate system functionality for technical and non-technical stakeholders
• As required, produce detailed documentation such as test plans, fabrication drawings, Bill Of Materials (BOM), and Graphical User Interface (GUI) wireframes
• Work with manufacturers and subcontracted engineers to ensure suitability, interoperability, and stability of show technical (audio) solutions
• Demonstrate technical ownership of projects by being deeply knowledgeable, highly organized, and extremely proactive
• Work with Technical Project Manager(s) to develop project plans inclusive of budget, schedule, goals, deliverables, dependencies, roles & responsibilities
• Work with Technical Project Manager(s) to ensure strong project controls (cost, schedule, quality)
• Act as Project Manager when a Technical Project Manager is not assigned for a project
• Supervise and support the deployment of show technical solutions, from concept through opening day
• Provide technical and creative support to the Sphere sound production department
• Be a key player in defining the needs of a creative software suite that realize content creator’s perspective and visions by identifying needed features and acting as the primary end-user to test released features.
• Create 3D system deployment visualizations and layouts and perform complex electroacoustic modeling and auralizations.


What do you need to succeed?

• Minimum of 10 years' experience in audio design, audio tech and engineering for film, television, live events, themed entertainment and/or large scale A/V integration.
• Working knowledge of CAD tools and audio measurement tools.
• Experience designing, engineering, and integrating large scale audio systems.
• Live event audio sound design and/or mix experience with large format experiences or concerts.
• In-depth understanding of sound techniques from capture through post to final master or mix for live events.
• Thorough knowledge of configuration and troubleshooting for current professional digital audio workstations, audio consoles and control surfaces, synchronization systems, and advanced digital signal processing systems.
• In depth working knowledge of MADI, OSC, MIDI, Word Clock, Dante, AES67/Ravenna, Q-LAN, and other audio over IP protocols.
• A comprehensive knowledge of networking for audio over IP including configuration and troubleshooting
• Thorough knowledge of leading audio creative and technical software and plug-ins.
• Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work under high pressure with tight deadlines.
• AVIXA CTS-D preferred
• Dante Level 3 preferred
• Q-Sys Level 2 preferred
• Experience building budgets
• Product development experience preferred
• Construction experience preferred
