Head of CG

Description

Come and work with us! We are working on exciting projects such as Marvel Studios’ What If…?, Shaun Tan’s Tales from Outer Suburbia, Disney Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, the recently announced Avatar: The Last Airbender feature film, Flying Bark’s own 200% Wolf, and many more.

We are looking for a Head of CG to expand our core supervision team, where even at that level we recognise the nature of work has changed and actively accommodate a healthy work/life balance. You would be joining an inclusive group of creative and technical artists that love collaborating and problem solving as a team.

About the role:

As a (Flying) Barker and member of the CG supervision crew:

  • You will work closely with the Head of Pipeline to assess, plan and execute a robust core pipeline workflow that services all productions in the most efficient way possible while considering overall requirements, new and existing technologies, budget and future proofing further development

  • You excel at identifying how the team should be working, finding ways to automate artists' workflows so they can concentrate on producing their high quality work.

  • You are an excellent problem solver with attention to detail, identifying how to split a complex task into smaller, more manageable ones and collaborating as necessary to find the best solution/s while prioritising to have the most impact with the time and resources available.

  • You are a fast learner, and never afraid to be involved in new workflows, new applications, new code and new technologies, putting in weekly on-box time for research and development.

  • Communication with others is second nature to you, ensuring the flow of information with production, artists and pipeline stays active.

  • You can identify when to invest time solving a problem properly and never look back, or make a one off exception and solve it now in whatever way possible.

  • You are not shy when it comes to proposing your ideas but are respectful of other key decision makers.

  • You are a team player who leads by example, can support your peers and artists when they are in need, and escalate issues if necessary.

  • You are calm under pressure and can demonstrate excellent time management and conflict management skills.

  • You will be the first point of contact for all our new shows, then adequately plan their technical requirements, identify equipment, software, data storage and back up needs. You’ll then liaise with the Pipeline Team to ensure the Pipeline requirements will be achievable or identify any potential roadblocks to solve.

  • You roll up your sleeves when needed, work on projects when necessary and pitch in to get things done.

Day to day:

  • You will interact with VFX supervisors, other CG supervisors, senior members of production and key creatives on various projects that need your technical guidance.

  • You will attend technical meetings with the productions and pipeline team to provide clarity about the development you are involved with.

  • You will be in constant communication with the supervision team, the pipeline team, as well as with Heads of Production.

  • You will be developing solutions with a specific project in mind or working at a higher company level and either way, aiming to expand the workflow and processes in a project agnostic way.

  • You will be documenting new and existing workflows for the benefit of the technical and creative teams, ensuring this and the company wiki is kept up to date.

  • You will be the first point of contact in company assessment and the decision making on new projects, new software and systems as well as their implementation;

  • You will participate in brainstorming sessions that require technical and creative input to find solutions;

The details:

  • We work with the Shotgrid Toolkit Framework, so experience in this area and or any other Asset Management systems is a must.

  • Our software stack involves Autodesk Maya, Substance Painter, Katana, Nuke and Houdini, as well as Toon Boom Harmony. Experience in one or multiple of these is required.

  • Excellent Python coding skills are a must. C++ knowledge would be a bonus for squeezing that extra performance needed in certain places.

  • You may be required to undertake business trips on occasion.

Join us and you can enjoy…

  • An informal working environment - we are a pet friendly studio.

  • Flexible working conditions, a hybrid approach between working from home / office.

  • Opportunities to learn from others and to showcase your work so others will learn from you.

  • Career progression, a pathway to improve your skills and experience to align to your professional development goals.

  • Regular company and team events to foster connection with others.

  • Modern collaboration tools to support our hybrid working approach.

  • Working on high profile 2D, 3D and hybrid animation projects for world class clients as well as our own IP and passion projects.

  • A relocation package and sponsorship to Australia for the right candidate and their family.
