Support NASA missions! The Space Telescope Science Institute is looking for a Visualization Designer II to join its team of science communication professionals in the Office of Public Outreach. The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a multi-mission science and flight operations center for NASA’s flagship observatories on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland. Learn more about our missions. This position can support hybrid work both onsite and from home. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV).
Your Role & Responsibilities
As a visualization designer in OPO, you will:
- Provide expert support to OPO in all aspects of scientific visualizations, astronomical simulations, 3D animations, and related products and experiences.
- Create visualizations for OPO news, education, and outreach products and programs in support of STScI news and public outreach goals.
- Collaborate with in-house writers, developers, educators, scientists, media specialists, and other designers to create a wide variety of astronomy-related materials for the public.
Qualifications
- Candidates must be flexible and able to work well both independently and in teams with diverse skills, experiences, working styles, preferences, and opinions.
- Programming (Perl, Python, C/C++, etc.) skills and abilities in working with 2D and 3D data sets – small and large.
- Proficiency in 3D software using Houdini or Maya.
- Understanding principles of 3D animation, simulations, and rendering.
- Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to follow established standards, meet deadlines, proactively communicate the progress of projects, and maintain an archive of work.
- Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of professional experience. Preferably with exposure to STEM-related subject matters.
Substitution of additional relevant education and/or experience for stated qualifications may be considered.
This role is a full-time, five-year term position with an option for renewal. Compensation is commensurate with education and experience. Our excellent benefits include:
