Professional Animation Faculty

Description

The Department of Visual Arts at Brigham Young University is seeking qualified applicants for a professional continuing status track position in Animation. The position in Animation—Pre-production begins Fall Semester, August, 2014. The Animation Program at Brigham Young University is an interdisciplinary program between Visual Arts, Theatre and Media Arts, and Computer Science. Since its creation in 2001 the program has emphasized both large collaborative and smaller personal projects/films which have won 12 student Emmys and 4 Student Academy Awards in the last 10 years with films shown at Cannes, Annecy, and Sundance just to name a few.

A Master of Fine Arts degree in Animation or a related field is strongly preferred. However, given the nature of this professional faculty position, candidates with a BFA in Animation and equivalent professional experience may be considered. Teaching experience at the college/university level is strongly preferred. The candidate should have an extensive background in animation pre-production (design, story, layout) specific but not limited to traditional and 3D animation.

Teaching responsibilities may include directing student inquiry at the foundation and advanced level of visual development, gesture drawing, figure drawing, storyboarding, layout and drawing fundamentals courses. In addition, teaching loads will also include student mentoring. It is also expected that the candidate will maintain an active scholarship record in the discipline and contribute to department/college/university committees.

Any applicant should be able to communicate with students and collaborate with colleagues in a collegial manner. Teaching in a professional faculty position has a unique and specific emphasis on teaching and direct student mentoring where student learning is at the forefront and an enthusiastic approach to learning is critical.  In accordance with the aims of the university and those of the program the instruction should not merely be that of skills or software training but rather a broader approach where critical thinking and problem solving is addressed. Through this approach the greater vision of life-long learning will enable graduates to become more than just technicians but rather active contributors in both the development of the art, story, technology and management of the industry.

Please complete an online application, attach a letter of application indicating your qualifications for this position, and a Curriculum Vitae.   Please mail a digital portfolio of personal, professional (figure drawing) and student work, student evaluations, and three confidential letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes with recommender’s signature on the flap.  Send to: Animation Faculty Search Committee, Linda Reynolds, Chair; Department of Visual Arts, E-509 HFAC; Brigham Young University, Provo  UT  84602-6414.  Application deadline is Tuesday, January 21, 2014.
